We had to chose between two islands for our island adventure, Culebra and Vieques. Most everyone agreed that Culebra had the nicest beaches and it also meant a shorter boat ride. I wanted to go to Vieques largely because of its notoriety. It has often been in the news due to the US using it is as a war training area. We have all seen the protests on TV. I also wanted the one hour boat ride. Kathleen and Marlene graciously agreed to go there.
The tickets for the round trip to Vieques for all three of us cost a total of $8.00. People were in the building for boarding both boats, and this was a lot of people! We found the correct line and chatted with a few people while we waited. The boats both ways were spacious and comfortable. Kay met a young man and his mother who were familiar with the island. His grandmother lives there. The mother was a TV producer in San Juan. She gave Kay her business card and said that if we had any problems on our Puerto Rico trip, to call her and she would try to help us. They also recommended a place to eat. Yes, this is the second person on this trip that gave us a number to call if we needed help. The people we came in contact with during the 12 day trip could not have been nicer or more helpful.
On the uphill walk to the restaurant we stopped and had our dessert first. The ice cream cone tasted good on a hot day. Then we walked onwards. Soon after we ordered our lunch, in walked the mother and son. The grandmother was already there waiting for them. The waiter was very helpful filling Kay's water bottle with ice cubes and was just a good server..
Since we spent so much time eating and talking it was no longer practical to find a swimming beach. We spent the time wandering around the town and sitting on a simple beach near the dock. Even though Culebra may have had the better beaches, I am glad we were here.

After we returned to Fajardo we started on our indirect path to the Fajardo Inn. The next day we plan to go to the El Junque rain forest. This promises to be a fine trip.
